3.
Part of the European hiking route E5:
The European hiking route E5 leads from the Lake
'Constance' to the historic city of 'Verona' at
the foot of the Alps of 'Lessin'. On this tour we
cover the southern, and the least known part of
the E5. We begin at one of the most beautiful sections
of this hiking route. By walking over the fissured
lime-stone of the 'Monte Pasubio' we cross plateaus,
ridges and gorges. The vistas are spectacular and
if the weather is good you can see the Adria, Lake
Garda and the Dolomites from here. This part of
the route was violently fought over during the First
World War and you can still find evidence of times
past. Wildflowers are abundent here with their vivid
colours. The Mediterranean climate is responsible
for the wide variety of flowers that thrive here.
Through the secluded limestone valleys of the 'Monte
Lessini' peak we finally reach the medieval 'Verona'
on the 'Etsch' river. A highlight of our tour is
the visit to the opera at the famous 'Arena of Verona'.

Region:
Alps of the 'Trentino' and the 'Lessin' area (Italy)
Daily routine:
Day 1:
Our meeting point is at 4:30 p.m. at the train station
of Rovereto. A taxi will pick us up and drive us
to the well managed 'Rif. Coe' at the 'Coe' pass
(1.600 m). We start with a short warm up tour to
the 'Sommo Alto' peak (1.600 m). For the night we
stay in the 'Rif. Coe'. Hiking time approx. 1½
hours, ascent 150 m, descent 150 m.
Day 2:
After a very early start an old wartime road leads
us to the 'Monte Maggio' peak (1.865 m) in an hour.
The view here is fantastic and ex-tends from the
snow-capped mountains of the 'Dolomites' to the
'Po' plains. Still continuing along the crest, our
trail leads us through old trenches, in some places,
to the 'Monte Borcoletta' peak (1.759 m). From there
we continue downhill along switchbacks to the 'Passo
della Borcola' (1.206 m). From here we ascend the
northern rock-spurs of the 'Monte Pasubio'. The
ascent of the fissured 'Pasubio' massiv is regarded
as one of the most beautiful sections of the European
hiking route E5. We descend by traversing a part
of the 'Monte Buso' and reach our destination of
the day, the 'Rif. Lancia' (1.825 m). Hiking time
approx. 8 hours, ascent 1.250 m, descent 950 m.
Day 3:
Todays itinerary relates very significantly to war
history. It passes an old front line of the First
World War, along old fortifications, trenches and
artillery sites we reach the 'Rif. Papa' (1.928
m). From there we hike gently along the impressive
'Strada degli Eroi', Street of Heroes, down to the
'Fuggazze' Pass (1.162 m). Through the 'Little Dolomites'
our trail leads us to the 'Rif. Campogrosso' (1.457
m). Hiking time approx. 7 hours, ascent 750 m, descent
1.200 m.
Day 4:
A long hike takes us via the 'Cima Carega' (2.259
m) to 'Giazza' (759 m), a German speaking area.
On top of the mountain you have a fantastic view
of the Adria, Lake Garda and the Dolomites, providing
the weather is cooperating. The hotel 'Albergo Belvedere'
is today's destination. Hiking time approx. 7 hours,
ascent 800 m, descent 1.500 m.
Day 5:
Ascent and descent, through hamlets and over cow pastures
we hike through the 'Alps of Lessin'. The route
leads us via the plateau of 'Papari' (1.469 m) to
'Albergo Croce' (1.147 m) and further on through
the 'Aal' valley to 'Erbezzo' (1.118 m). That night
we stay in an hotel. Hiking time approx. 7 hours,
ascent 1.000 m, descent 600 m.
Day 6:
The final itinerary of our journey leads us once
again through a fascinating lime-stone landscape.
Descending through the 'Anguille' valley to 'Portello'
(776 m), we cross the 50 meter long natural arch
bridge 'Ponte di Veja' (620 m). After lunch in a
typical Italian 'Trattoria' we will take the bus
through the vineyards of 'Valpolicella' to 'Verona'.
After a stroll through the city we visit the opera
at night in the famous 'Arena of Verona'. Tonight we stay in an hotel. Hiking
time approx. 4 hours, ascent 150 m, descent 800
m.
Day 7:
After breakfast there is still time for another
short visit of Verona. Return to Rovereto by train,
arrival approx. 12 o'clock and visit of the historical
war museum of Rovereto. From there you can either
commence your homeward journey or you are welcome
to stay a little longer in 'Rovereto'. |
