‘Stubai’ Mountain Summits
South of Innsbruck, the ‘Stubai Alps’ lay between the ‘Ötz’ and the ‘Ziller’ valley. They attract
the mountaineers with many well known and beautiful three thousand meter peaks.
‘Zuckerhütl’, ‘Wilder Pfaff’ and ‘Wilder Freiger’ are the better known and certainly the most
impressive of the 3.000 meter summits in the area. |

Region:
Alps of the ‘Stubai’ area (Austria)
Daily routine:
Day 1:
Our meeting point is at 2:00 p.m. at the center in ‘Neustift’, opposite the church. A taxi with a
special permit takes us to ‘Oberriss’ (1.700 m). From here we ascend gently to the ‘Franz-
Senn’ hut (2.147 m).
Hiking time approx. 1,5 hours, ascent 450 m.
Day 2:
Up through the ‘Höllenrachen’ to the ‘Alpeiner’ glacier. On this shallow glacier we have a
very good opportunity to get used to our crampons. The last 100 meters to the ‘Wildgrat’ Col
(3.168 m) we ascend via a newly built and well secured ‘klettersteig’. From there we descend
via the flat ‘Schwarzenberg’ glacier and the ‘Schwarzenberg’ moraine to the ‘Amberger’ hut
(2.135 m).
Hiking time approx. 7 hours, ascent 1.000 m, descent 1.000 m.
Day 3:
Starting very early we hike through the fairly level ‘Sulz’ valley. At an altitude of 2.700 m we
reach the ‘Sulz’ valley glacier. Via this shallow glacier we ascend to the ‘Wütenkar’ saddle
(3.115 m). By crossing the ‘Wütenkar’ glacier we reach the ‘Hochstubai’ hut. During the day
we can either up the ‘Windacher Daunkogel’ peak (3.351 m) or practise crevasse rescue
on the glacier.
Hiking time approx. 5 hours, ascent 1.000 m.
Day 4:
From the ‘Hochstubai’ hut the route follows over the ‘Warenkar’ glacier, the ‘Warenkar’ Col
and the ‘Windacher’ glacier to the ‘Bildstöckel’ Col (3.332 m). Here we pass the ‘Stubai’
summer ski-resort. The descent takes us down to the ‘Hildesheimer’ hut (2.899 m) via the
‘Gaisskar’ glacier. In the afternoon we have enough time to try the newly built ‘klettersteig’ via
the ‘Falken’ ridge.
Hiking time approx. 6 hours, ascent 350 m, descent 500 m.
Day 5:
From the ‘Hildesheimer’ hut we reach the ‘Pfaffen’ glacier, the ‘Pfaffen’ pass and the ‘Pfaffen’
saddle (3.332 m). From the saddle we climb ‘Zuckerhütl’ peak (3.505 m) in small group.
After a short descent we climb back up to the ‘Wilden Pfaff’ peak (3.458 m). On an easy
route we get to the cosy ‘Müller’ hut (3.143 m).
Hiking time approx. 6 hours, ascent 750 m, descent 550 m.
Day 6:
The up to the ‘Wilden Freiger’ peak (3.418 m) starts over a fairly level glacier. The rock
ridge to the summit is protected with a fixed steel cable and should not cause us any trouble.
The view here is marvellous and reaches from the ‘Ortler’ toward the ‘Dolomites’ to the ‘Hohe
Tauern’ mountains. Descent is via the ‘Gamsspitzl’ peak to the ‘Nürnberger’ hut (2.280 m).
After lunch our descend leads us through the ‘Langen’ valley to ‘Ranalt’. Bus transfer to
‘Neustift', arrival approx. 5:00 p.m. From there you can either commence your homeward
journey or you are welcome to stay a little longer in the ‘Stubai’ valley.
Hiking time approx. 8 hours, ascent 300 m, descent 1.100 m. |
